Description

It was pointed out to me by KarmaSong that this picture is actually of the Blue Mosque, not the Hagia Sophia. After some checking I realized that he was correct and I was wrong and had been careless. In the picture I posted I saw 4 minarets, and the Hagia Sophia has 4 minarets, the Blue Mosque has 6. But the 4 minarets visible in my post show 3 balconies each, which 4 of the 6 minarets have, the 4 minarets of the Hagia Sophia have only 2 balconies each. In the olden days these minarets were used by a muezzin 5 times a day to call for prayer. As Jean-Luc (KarmaSong) pointed out, the two buildings are located close to each other. They are both massive and beautiful and an easy way to tell them apart is the number of minarets. The difference is that the Hagia Sophia which means 'Holy Spirit' was built as a cathedral in Constantinople (now Istanbul) in the 6th century to serve Orthodox Christianity, was converted in 1453 into a mosque, after Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II and served as such until 1931 and was closed. It re-opened in 1935 as a museum. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) was built between 1609 and 1616 and it still serves as a mosque today but is open to the public at certain times of the day. To enter, footwear needs to be removed, the body must be properly covered, and women were required to cover their heads. Thank you Jean-Luc for pointing this error out to me. BTW, previous posts of these houses of worship were properly identified. This photo was taken on 28 June 2013, Sig...

This gorgeous photo and majestic masterpiece of beauty remind me of my first time in Istanbul...I was just wondering whether this mosque is not actually... the blue mosque ?! Hagia Sophia is nearby, more massive with part of its walls painted in reddish ochre, if my memory serves me right ....
