Thank you so much for this exquisite painting, Carol. It has all the elements of your amazing alcohol-ink work, but it also has a cartoonish glee, and a lot of children's illustration in it too. I love the bulbous, bulging lines of the poppies---they bulge and pop into our sight like glee-filled kids. And I love your many shades of pink and red and even some orange and ochre (mixed with greens). Your cells of color and energy in this style are just the best; and here, they pop out and squeeze into view as if they were all dying to 'get into the shot'---and smile at us in the process. It's absolutely delightful. And it makes me feel terrific, like you brought out a whole bunch of your art forms to say happy birthday!
Greens and pinks are, of course, complementary colors, and so make a wonderful contrast and energy. The greens (well, and yellow-greens, brown-greens, ochre-greens, etc) of the lower half are wonderfully contrasted with the pinks above, but peaceful too, as they're less saturated than what lower stems often have. (They're not dark greens, mostly.) And those bubbles, mixed with your long watercolor-wash lines, are like the moisture of the earth bubbling up to nourish the whole plant. These kinds of expression are why people go wild over these pieces of yours. These poppies are just dying to give everyone a big hug! Beautiful work, and a wonderful birthday gift---thank you so much, Carol. I don't need to make a wish, because this piece has all of them in it already. A wonderful gift, and I thank you deeply, and for the gift of your friendship, which is as flowering and opulent as this painting. Thank you, this is just wonderful.

So glad you enjoyed this painting, Mark. I think we all remember wonderful birthdays from our childhood, and this seemed to go with those happy memories. I think your beautiful comment made these poppies bloom a little brighter. And if you do decide to make a wish someday, these poppies will be here waiting to make it come true. Birthday hugs, my friend. :o)

What a lovely painting! I love the way your colors flow to form such a tight pattern that still manages to remain ethereal and light. Beautiful work, and such control. I'm very impressed.
