Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English Civilization Humanity: Naming Convention For Confirmed Technical Civilizations 'IAU 2261 Resolution B3' is the Language English1 designation for Civilization Humanity's official naming convention for confirmed technical civilizations2. Adopted by the IAU3 on 16 August 22614, this convention is outlined by the following five rules.
  1. Naming will include the term 'Civilization', or equivalent translation.
  2. Naming will include the constellation wherein a civilization's birth world is found.
This is to say in the direction of said constellation, not necessarily among the composite stars.
  3. If there is more than one confirmed civilization within a specific constellation, naming will include the spectral class5 of the civilization's central star.
    • In Constellation Sagittarius there are three confirmed civilizations. They are named Civilization Sagittarius Red, Sagittarius White and Sagittarius Orange. Or alternatively, Sagittarius M, Sagittarius A and Sagittarius K respectively.
  4. If two confirmed civilizations have arisen from the same birth world, naming of the older civilization will include the term 'Elder' or equivalent translation.
    • There is no report of more than two civilizations evolving out of the same biosphere within the Milky Way Galaxy.6
  5. When naming by astronomical location is not appropriate, naming will include a relevant species centric description.
Members of Civilization Gardener are not native to the Milky Way. In addition, the Gardeners are an engineered species with a specific social purpose.7 The IAU named Civilization Gardener to reflect that social purpose.8
For varied reasons, the Civilization Humanity does not name other civilizations in accordance with what their memberships name themselves. There is often no direct translation. Some intelligent species do not communicate verbally. There are anatomical and perceptive differences preventing usage of alien terms. Most civilizations use species centric self identification - members of Civilization Sagittarius Orange call themselves 'the graceful', loosely translated. Such references are not sufficiently distinguishing for non-member intelligences. Therefore the IAU convention applies earth centric naming for simplicity. There are four exemptions to the established convention. Unless there is a strong scientific reason, an established name stands even when made in error.
  1. Civilization Humanity: This IAU convention is extended to include Humanity through Rule 5 above.
  2. Civilization Isis: The first confirmed technical civilization detected by Civilization Humanity,9 their naming predates the establishment of this convention. Also, their naming was prior to understanding that they did not originate in the Isis star group but in the neighbouring Constellation Lepus.
  3. Civilization Isis Elder: Presumed extinct, forebears of Civilization Isis – named through Rule 4 above - they also originated in Constellation Lepus.10
  4. Civilization Lacerta: Not native and no longer dwelling in the Milky Way. The IAU named this civilization prior to understanding these facts.11

Beautiful representation of an alien solar system. The proximity to the primary would give rise to some spectacular planet side views!
