Description

This view is along the breakwater near Rambla Francia and shows the buildings of Ciudad Vieja of Montevideo in the distance. The breakwater is protecting the Montevideo harbor and is used by locals for fishing. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the remnants of the German Panzerschiff, pocket battleship, 'Admiral Graf Spee' which was scuttled 5 miles offshore in December 1939 within view of the Montevideo Harbor. The 'Admiral Graf Spee', a cruiser with a full load displacement of 16,280 T, was sent to the South Atlantic and after the beginning of WWII was raiding the Merchant Sea Lanes and between September and December 1939 sank nine ships, totaling 50,089 BRT before being confronted by three British cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) on 13 December 1939. 'Admiral Graf Spee' inflicted heavy damage on the British ships but she too was damaged and was forced to put into port at Montevideo. Convinced by false reports of superior British Naval Forces approaching his ship, her commander, Hans Langendorff, ordered her to be scuttled rather to let her fall into enemy hands. The ship was partially broken up 'in situ', but part of her remained visible above the surface of the water (Source: Wikipedia). The remnants remained in place for decades, but over time they became a hazard to navigation and were removed before I had a chance to visit Montevideo. This picture was taken on 28 November 2006, Sig...

I agree, it's fascinating to see these places through your eyes, places I'll probably never get to see any in person. Wonderful!
