Description

Taken in Bandon. Not sure about the health of this particular starfish - it seems to be excreting some kind of white milky fluid. There has been a virus ("sea star associated densovirus") that has been killing off millions of starfish on the west coast of the U.S. & perhaps this one has been infected - I just don't know enough about these creatures to say for sure... Please zoom.

Naturally you got my curiousity peaked. Here is what I read about the milky substance: "Some stars are actually quite large waste producers and will release large amounts of waste into the water column, more commonly with brittle stars and the like (predaceous types). This will moreso be a light colored milky liquid (kinda gelatinous) that will rise free of the body. While feasting, nothing is released."

Interesting since I did not know that about Starfish, but I guess it has to go somewhere. :)

Hard to tell sometimes on the health of starfish. Was this in an aquarium? Great lighting and textural effects in this image.

ditto harry and others. This is even more intense than the last shot, and it could easily be seen as a massive conglomerate abstract from nature. Amazing textures and collision of forms. I'm sorry about the starfish, and we can see the secretions you speak of. But visually it's otherworldly. Wonderful textures and hues. I hope the disease doesn't make the starfish an endangered specie.
