Description

I feel sure I have posted photos of my silent warrior before, but I cant find them in here. This is one of several softwood carvings made by 12-16 year old pupils under my supervision when I was still teaching. We were instructed by a professional woodcarver called Jonathan Clunies-Ross from Wales. Each one was made by a team led by an older pupil with a younger one and one with special needs, with a parent watching in case of chisel injury. This probably would not be allowed now, with the compensation culture spread from the US and over protective parenting far too common. However, no one was hurt and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The helmet and some shields were made by a team supervised by my colleague in metalwork, from copper hot water cylinders from the scrapyard. I have this one because the lass who was the lead carver could not take it home as her parents are Jehovah's Witnesses, and this is an evil idol ! Another Here

This is fabulous! I love this character. He has such a fantastic range of expressions on that face. With several different people contributing to his creation, the end result is wonderful. As for the ridiculious world of rules we live in now, all I can say is that it is a shame that children are not allowed to have an imagination. There is little encouragement to do anything except to hit keys on a computer. Also, by blending such a diverse group of children, they were actually thought to work together.... Individual thoughts and tallent blended to create something. Now there is an interesting concept. I guess that is not to be allowed now.

Is he lost? He looks so sad. Its a real shame that such wonderful creativity is being suffocated by overly zealous safety concerns.

I love him, what a shame the pupil couldn't take her handy work home. He fits your garden perfectly.

Now that's awesome teamwork, the markings are amazing on both the statue and hat.

Like how you put these together, and adding the adding the eyeballs to make this wonderful Viking part of your flower garden.

Great photo and fascinating history, thanks for sharing Andrea.

What a wonderful cooperative piece of creativity. I love that you had them work in teams like that. I hope the lead student at least got a photo of this guy for her portfolio.

Love it! (I'm doing a few more in your gallery tonight, so cancel your appointments lol. I'll do a real session soon...) This may be a joint effort, but I can't be the only one who sees your influence in it. It really does have a touch of Andrea in it. I love the caricature, and the wonderfully bulbous features; and you must've taught them about using the grain---because the grain on the nose is perfect, as if it grew just to be carved that way. I love the angled lips, as if he's sneering (vikings weren't known for their hospitality, or fine stand-up comedy for that matter) (hey, I just flew in from Valhalla, and boy are MY arms tired...ba-da-bing ba-da-boom, but seriously folks...), and I love the inset eyes, and how it emerges out of the leaves. Looks like it was winter. Love the photo, and the whole presence. Tara said, in a recent phone talk, that being in your place would be like being in a carnival for artists. There's so much stuff to see---and it's become iconic for us. You'll have to set up viewings if we ever get to Britain. Love this upload.
