Description

We arrived early enough to watch the sun rise behind Angkor Wat, the best known of the more than 100 famous temples of Angkor. These temples were built between seven and eleven centuries ago when the Kmer civilization was at the height of its extraordinary creativity, and constituted one of humankind's most magnificent architectural achievements. From Angkor, the kings of the mighty Kmer Empire ruled over a vast territory that extended from the tip of what is now Southern Vietnam northward to Yunnan in China and from Vietnam westward to the Bay of Bengal. Angkor's 100 or so temples constitute the sacred skeleton of a spectacular administrative and religious center where houses, public buildings and palaces were constructed of wood - now long decayed - because the right to dwell in structures of brick and stones was reserved for the gods (Source: Lonely Planet, Cambodia, 1992). Seeing these temples at day time is a once in a lifetime experience - period. But arriving early enough to watch it slowly getting lighter, waiting for the sun to creep over the temple while it is totally quiet, is a humbling experience especially when considering that these structures, and this culture existed during a time when America hadn't been discovered yet, and Europe was still in in the Middle Ages when the common believe, advocated by the church, was that the earth was flat and the center of the Universe. Everything I have seen in my lifetime so far pales in comparison to these temples. The Angkor Wat temple complex is near Siem Reap, Cambodia. This picture was taken on 14 August 2012, Sig....

Superb shot. We were fiddling around taking pictures under a full moon the other night. Such a different set of techniques!
