Description
Captured 4/9/16 @ 8:08 on an overcast morning, within walking distance of my habitat.
I've always had a fascination with railroad tracks, so I was compelled to stray off the comparative safety of the adjacent sidewalk, and venture out into this post-apocalyptic stretch of metal, wood, rust, and loose rocks. This is where angels fear to tread, and where one misstep is an invitation to disaster, so it was quite a challenge for a doddering old klutz like myself to risk body and soul for an extensive photo shoot. In fact, every step I take is an adventure, even under the most ideal conditions. In any event, this is the first of a wide array of shots I took of this God forsaken area. And judging by all the trash and graffiti, I'm not the only one who pays it a visit. I lead a dangerous life.

Fanntastic perspective and capture Harry !!!

Very nice view. The shine on the left track shows it's in regular use while the rust on the siding shows it's rarely used. Nice view of the heart piece of the switch - adds interest. Looking along tracks like this draws the eye to the horizon where they seem to meet. Keep up the good work! And don't fall! :-)

An excellent capture and I am so glad you survived this dangerous photo shoot. Exciting to live dangerously though. ☺

I love your narrative: It's great to read about how you make your journeys, and how perilous they can be. I know the terrain very, very well: I've gone into some of our huge trainyards here, and tried to traverse them. They are indeed dangerous. The stones are hard to walk on. The ties and tracks are illusory: They look easy to traverse, but you can easily step into a crevice and go crashing down. Then there are all kinds of "things" all over: I mean "things," pieces of old train engines, chunks of unknown metal, wires, god-knows-what. It's like the refuse area of the gods---and you don't always see what's beneath your feet: It's kind of a jungle; and with the back troubles you had, I can appreciate how walking here, away from the intersection, can be like walking into a great wilderness. Track yards and beds can feel like an accident waiting to happen...But as a photographer, whaddya gonna do? You gotta follow the call! Esp now that you're so mobile again---you want to explore this unique terrain. I don't blame you a bit...
As T.Rex says, it's fine shot of the heart of the track-switch. He also noticed the cleaner rails as opposed to the rustier ones. And he knows enough to know that the cleaner ones are the ones that are used the most (thus shiny), while the rustier ones are unused (thus rusted). The contrast is subtle and beautiful. I also love the musty gray patina of the whole---it fits the hues of the yard. There are often old decayed walls along your tracks, and sheds and such. (In Chicago, tracks often go right up against homes. I've been in some of those homes, and believe me, it can get reeeeeallllllly loud...) Fine exploring, Harry, and a fascinating alluring shot of the numbing repetition and real variety of tracks, with fascinating objects everywhere. I just hope we don't get word that you disappeared, and wound up in a shed in Manitoba...carried away by a train that didn't "see" you. (And you writing home, "uh---someone wanna come and pick me up? I'm the guy next to a 40 foot high bale of wheat...")

Yep, I've tripped on more than one of these dang things. The ties aren't evenly spaced, so just when you think you can walk---you can't!! Great shot---you nailed this one for sure!!

reminds me of one of best King's tales...a group of boys in a place like this. What happened changed their life

Careful out there, Harry...uneven ground and sneaky trains and things, it's an accident waiting to happen indeed! And it looks so inviting....great shot!!!
