The banjo is a four-, five- or (occasionally) six-stringed instrument with a thin membrane stretched over a frame or cavity as a resonator, called the head. The membrane, or head, is typically made of plastic, although animal skin is still occasionally but rarely used, and the frame is typically circular. Early forms of the instrument were fashioned by Africans in America, adapted from African instruments of similar design.
The banjo is frequently associated with country, folk, Irish traditional and bluegrass music. Historically, the banjo occupied a central place in African American traditional music, before becoming popular in the minstrel shows of the 19th century. The banjo, with the fiddle, is a mainstay of American old-time music. It is also very frequently used in Traditional ("Trad") Jazz.

...great shot of the player and also the painting Jocko, a rather sad looking character, maybe he is concentrating ? - this type of music should be a happy event, have you ever seen the Scottish comedian and musician Billy Connolly playing the Banjo ?

My father had a rather ordinary one from the 20's until my mother bought him a gold plated one in his waning years. He switched to an electyric guitar to stay contemporary.

I fully understand Brigitte's (blondeblurr) comment; but it's only because so many people don't play for hours on end, and so they don't know how 'immersed' a musician can get (even when playing joyous music). The man's expression here is typical of a musician immersed in his music, and he may be looking to the other musicians too, for cues. A very fine capture of a musician involved in his music; and I already wrote what I loved about the painting. I just marvel at what you do with a photograph. You utterly transform it and bring out its inner life.
