Description

Once upon a time.... Britain used to build cars, world record breaking cars.. This was one of them.. Dreamed up by the boffins at MG and scribbled on a beermat (as they tended to do back then), the plan was to design a car around a standard sub frame and aim for certain records, (150mph and upwards). The EX's first record fell in 1938 on the Frankfurt motorway (which must have annoyed Von Hitler some).. The aim was to break the 150mph record, it sped to 186.6 on the first run! Easy work.. On the Dessau motorway the car soon afterwards broke 200mph and 3 others in other classes on the same day.. War came obviously and record runs stopped but it started afterwards and reached 204mph in Italy.. In Bonneville, USA it reached unofficially 220mph before crashing.. And yes, I bet you never knew.. I didn't and I love MGs! Taken at the Heritage Car Museum, and none of the photos from here have been seen yet and I rate it as the best car museum I've seen... Rob

I must say I own a little MG in my life time, and although it was a blast to drive. It was the worst car I ever owned. It always had something going wrong with it. My MG dealer mechanic would always start in a think British accent, that repairs on this car were a bit of a problem. I finally reached my limit on this car when the intake manifold cracked. It was just a cast iron pipe, but cost a small fortune to replace. The person I sold it to was a bit more mechanically inclined and I believe he just welded the crack and got a deal since I had discounted the car. I then bought a Corvette which turned out to be the best car I ever owned, and yes I believe it could get close to that 200 MPH, but would have likely crashed it. I got up to 150 and chickened out. Get pic. boy for 1938 the Brits sure showed some style.

It looks like it's doing 200 mph just sitting still! What a road rocket! I remember seeing some movies of the run at Bonneville. Great shot of it, Rob!

We all feel very 'modern' today with our iphones and other other assorted shite....but just look at what they were capable of building in 1938. Mind blowing mate. Andrew
