Description
I took some people to New Orleans to go on a cruise and then I went to Mississippi to Vicksburg. the site of a major Civil War battle and final resting place for 17000 Confederate soldiers and Union. I do not know the number on the Union side, but the Union won the battle
this structure is in the American Military Park at Vicksburg. it is really worth the time to visit there to grasp the loss of life

The Illinois State Memorial in Vicksburg National Military Park
The structure was modeled after Rome's Temple of Minerva Medici and the Pantheon; it was dedicated on October 26, 1906.

Sounds like a great trip. I have been to a WWII military cemetery in Luxemborg. It was an awe-inspiring experience. I can imagine this one is equally atmospheric. There are some things that really are worth personally experiencing.

I saw this when it went up, and I was struck by the striking angles you got on the pillars, making them almost embrace the field in front of them...yet, at the same time, it's as if they were warped by all that happened here. The rolling hills can't help but suggest the entombment of so many soldiers. And it's so lush now...A beautiful capture of the lush rolling landscape in this area, with a large swath of that dramatic sky---as if the sky were commemorating the loss that took place here. Finely done, once more.
