Considered on purely theoretical since 1933 by the German Walter Baade and the Swiss Fritz Zwicky, the existence of neutron stars was not really taken seriously than thirty years later with the discovery of pulsars.

In 1967, the English astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Anthony Hewish were studying the effect of the interplanetary medium on the propagation of radio waves and accidentally discovered a source, PSR 1919 + 21, which was emitting radio pulses of very regular basis. Very quickly other astronomers began to light the existence of many similar sources.

These sources are all characterized by very rapid pulsation period between a few milliseconds and several seconds, especially extreme regularity, the period is stable with relative accuracy trillionth.
