Un planétaire désigne un ensemble mécanique mobile, figurant le système solaire (le Soleil et ses planètes) en tout ou partie. Généralement les astres représentés sont animés soit manuellement, soit par un mécanisme d'horlogerie. Ces planétaires tentent de simuler la réalité dans un but didactique ou de démonstration.

Des personnages se sont illustrés en construisant des planétaires : manuels comme Christian Huygens (1629-1695), ou actionnés par un mouvement d'horlogerie comme Antide Janvier (1751-1835).

A planetary denotes a movable mechanical assembly, contained solar system (Sun and planets) in whole or part. Generally represented the stars are animated either manually or by a clockwork mechanism. These planetary attempt to simulate reality for didactic purposes or demonstration.

Characters have distinguished themselves by constructing planetary: textbooks as Christian Huygens (1629-1695), or operated by a clockwork as Antide Janvier (1751-1835).
