Description

This is the business end, the nose, of the de Havilland DH-98 Mosquito tail number KA 114, showing the four 20 mm (.79 in) Hispano MK II cannon and the four .303 (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns. The fuselage and wings of this aircraft were made from Ecuadorian Balsa wood and Canadian Birch, because there was a shortage of metal but also it made the aircraft lighter and faster. The Mosquito was one of the fastest aircraft at the time. The appearance of this aircraft, and a ME 109, were the carrots my buddy dangled in front of me to induce me to come to the show this year. We had buddy passes, only paid for the taxes of the round-trip flight Phoenix-Boston-Philadelphia, so that was another inducement. Seeing the Amish country again helped also. Having a change of scenery helped too. The day we left, Phoenix got its first spike in temperature, hitting official temperatures of 115 F As to the Mosquito, it was just about impossible to get a clear shot of this beautiful aircraft, because it had not been at Mid Atlantic before and was one of the main attractions, and when it flew listening to the sweet sound of those Merlin engines was another treat. This picture was taken at Reading on 3 June 2016, Sig.... .
