Description

Avalda was the mistress of Ezzelino 3rd da Romano, who was an Italian feudal lord in the March of Treviso (in the modern Veneto) who was a close ally of the emperor Frederick II and ruled Verona, Vicenza and Padua for almost two decades during the first half of the 13th century. He became infamous as a cruel tyrant though much of his sinister reputation may be due to the propaganda of his many enemies, who portrayed him as a son of the Devil. Anyway, his mistress Avalda was also infamous for her interest in witchcraft and poisons (of course according to the Black Legend that still is alive in Padua). When Ezzelino got tired of Avalda, he had her murdered by an assassin. They say that her ghost still haunts the Castle of Monselice, near Padua. Here a reenactress was haunting the castle garden.
