Description

While on the road we would sometimes pass isolated houses. Simple structures with rarely more than three rooms and without electricity, these houses belong to subsistence farmers who work their small plots for mostly local consumption. It reminded me of the early settlers in the American west but without the threat from the native peoples, the TaĆno people of Cuba being largely wiped out by disease, war and slavery in the sixteenth century.

As you say, it's a hard life for these people. And yet, your shot captures a soft and lush surrounding, which must be a great grace for people who toil so hard. The home is minimal, but you captured real beauty and opulence here, not material but natural. I love the way the light seems to come down on this sight, like a cloud descending on the earth. Another special and intimate shot from your Cuban trip. (It strikes me how much you extract from a trip. I mean, the trip couldn't have lasted months, yet your series feel like months-long journeys into the interior of a culture. I've loved this series from the start.)
