Description
ntil half the warriors of the assembled villages move out into the night. Those who have made up their minds later have to travel fast all night to catch up with the advance parties. Cheyenne warrior Black Coyote and his wife Buffalo Calf Road Woman are among them.
The following day, around 8:00 A.M. advance parties of the free Indians and Shoshoni Army Scouts will finally bump into each other. Fighting will break out, the Lakota and Cheyenne warriors quickly rushing to the sound of the firing, commencing the battle. Crooke's troops, strung out over several miles, horses unsaddled for grazing, will be caught completely unprepared cooking coffee. Ironically, it will be Crooke's auxiliary Shoshoni and Crow forces who will throw themselves into the unfolding Lakota-Cheyenne onslaught, preventing Crooke's army from being overrun.
The battle will rage for the whole day with many daring feats by many warriors. The Cheyennes will name this battle after Buffalo Calf Road Woman, as she will gain fame by rescuing her brother Comes in Sight from certain death under heavy enemy fire, receiving cheers from friend and foe alike and rekindling the resolve of her fellow warriors. Crooke and his officers, surprised and startled by the tenacity of the Lakota and Cheyennes, will finally retreat to bury their dead and take care of their many wounded. The Lakota and Cheyenne will celebrate this engagement, the biggest yet in Plains warfare, lifting their spirits and strengthening their resolve. Two other Army attack columns are out in the field. Custer, not knowing that Crooke has effectively been kicked out of the campaign, will attack the victors of the Rosebud eight days later - to his death.
