Description

One of the things we usually do when we go back to Pennsylvania for the Mid-Atlantic War Museums annual airshow is going to the Grandview Speedway on Saturday night, and on this trip this was no exception. Grandview Speedway is an oval one-third mile dirt track located just east of Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania. The track was opened in 1963 and has been operated by the same family since. Races usually include two or three classes, Sportsman, Modified, or TSRV Sprint Car Series. All cars are highly modified, but they all have healthy sounding, loud V 8 engines. Maximum capacity for spectators is 5,000, but I have never seen it filled to capacity. First impression is that times haven't changed at all, it could still be the mid-60s. There is absolutely no ethnic or cultural diversity evident. All seemed to be locals from the surrounding area, both audience and drivers. Those of the drivers that are successful may make it to NASCAR. The track was prepared by two graders and two water trucks and when the races started it began with several qualifying races, 8 laps each, many collisions, a couple of fires, and many no finishes.Laps run under caution did not count, so that gave us time to check out the locals. My buddy mentioned jokingly (I think) that probably 98% of the audience are Trump supporters, and he probably wasn't far off. Halfway through the races the track dried, it became dusty and dirty, but that was part of the fun. It also sprinkled some rain, all part of the fun. Parking was free on a grass parking lot, admission was free for active duty personnel, no discount for veterans. By the time the races were over about 31/2 hours later we had our fun.
