Description

The books arrived today. They are both by one of my favourite natural history authors, and the one on the left was only available briefly as he published it privately. He is round about the same age as me and although our backgrounds are very different his experience of nature has many parallels. On the cover flap he writes "Fifties England was not just a different century. It was a different country; a lost world. Rural children roamed far and free, playing in farm, fields and disused wartime airfields. They spent a lot of time in trees and other thrillingly dangerous places. There was no 'elf and safety. There were no computers, no supermarkets, no motorways and not much traffic. Obviously there were no mobile phones, but to begin with we didn't have have phones. For Sunday lunch it was always joint with roast potatoes. " and he writes much more, ending " That lost England was a good place to grow up in. We thought it would last forever." I wanted to answer this challenge which was called Something Kids Today will Never Know. with an image of the silence that is the absence of human made noise, but that is beyond my skills. And then the book popped through the door, Perfect! See the front of them Here

Very interesting. I think kids miss out on so much natural fun today.

Mister Marren could be talking about my childhood. I started out in a small town north of Los Angeles surrounded by farm land where I climbed the eucalyptus trees that served as windbreaks for the lemon orchard behind them. My peers and I would sometimes steal lemons from that orchard. We drank soda made with real sugar and sat at dinner tables made from real wood. We rode in cars with metal dashboard and no seat belts. I had an indentation in my chest from my mother’s arm which would whip out whenever the car would come to a sudden stop. Back then the San Fernando Valley, which is part of Los Angeles County, was mostly open rolling hills. Today it is covered in concrete, roads and buildings. While I have long since made my peace with all this I can certainly understand Marren’s nostalgia and your aversion to large cities.

Memories of a lost world most of my old stamping grounds are under Nottingham University campus the small stream we used to dam with mud and then blow up with penny bangers is probably in a pipe now , the park where we fished for goldfish with cotton and a bent pin only to be chased by the park keeper is still there but I wonder if the fish are, the gravel pits where we used to fish is now a nature reserve a good thing but I wonder if kids now are allowed to roam unchecked. Nice thoughts.
