Description

Yesterday, while sitting at my computer desk and looking out the window, I noticed my cat was in a stalking position – belly on the ground, intently staring at something and creeping forward. I looked in the direction the cat was looking and saw this baby chicken wandering along unaware of what was about to happen. I was quick enough to get outside and catch it before the cat did. Whew. After the initial excitement I began wondering where this baby chicken came from. I live in the middle of 25 acres of woodland and the closet neighbor is maybe 300 yards away. That is a long way for a baby chick to wander alone. I called this neighbor and asked if she had any chickens but she said no. My next nearest neighbors house is maybe ¼ mile away thru more woodland that is full of predators (hawks, owls, red fox, coyotes, snakes, feral cats and loose dogs) just to name a few looking for such an easy and tasty meal. He had no chickens either and did not know of anyone close who did. I suppose it is remotely possible that a hawk had caught it and flew to my land and somehow dropped it and did not or could not catch it again. A long shot by any reasoning but strange stuff happens. So I am still wondering how it got in my yard, lol. I brought the chick inside and put it in a wire cage I had. I put down newspapers and used some cat food cans to put water and food (some smashed up dry dog food). It took a bit of time but the baby chick did eat and drink so that was good. I suspect it is about 3 weeks old because it has lost it’s down and had feathers. It could even fly several feet high. Now I had to decide what to do next. I suspected that inside with the a/c set at 78 F, was not a good environment for a baby chicken and that dog food was not the best food either. I made a pile of old socks for it to bed up in and put a large towel over the cage. Although it is as cute as any baby chicken is, I have no desire to take on the task and expense of raising it, I just wanted to give it a better chance of survival than being alone in a predator filled world. It made it thru the night with no apparent harm. I knew I had to build an outside cage and get the appropriate food it would need. This meant a trip to the local feed and seed store. When I got there and explained the situation, the lady who owns the store told me she had a couple of yard chickens, inside a fenced area and one of the hens had 2 chicks about 4 or 5 weeks old. She said she would gladly take the chick off my hands and give it a new home. So before store closing time today, I made the trip back to town and handed it over to her. Whew again, lol. All comments are appreciated and my thanks to those who have taken the time to respond. Lee

Thanks for the story and the nice photo. Strange things do happen in nature - like a lion and deer being best friends! Glad you could find a home for little Cat Food. Keep up the good work! :-)

I absolutely love this. I don't usually read all that people write, but since I like chickens I had to read the whole thing. Thanks for writing. 😀
