A character portrait from We're All Going to Die Young Anyway, my current attempt at writing a YA space opera series. In the distant future, mankind has been chased off of Earth, and is now trying to reestablish itself on other worlds. Of course, the malevolent entities that drove the humans from Earth have tracked them down, and now humans and their alien allies must fight for survival. Depicted here is one of the main protagonists, Priya He'er and her big sis HyLona, posing for a photo after a swim. Priya is adopted; her biological parents died in transit to their new homeworld, and she was found by HyLona's parents, who took her in and raised her as if she were a Mahy'Ran like them. She tries valiantly to fit in with the Mahy'Ran, but as a human, she is subject to the laws of the Extrasolar Federation, and while she doesn't quite fit in with the Mahy'Ran, she will soon discover that she doesn't fit in very well with her fellow humans, either.
