Description

We had a great adventure this Saturday. Last week Ray discovered there was a snapping turtle in the Frog Pond (the reservoir for the non-functioning ornamental watermill). Fearing damage to small fingers and toes and potential hazard to our Koi if the turtle moved another 100 ft., we consulted the local Fish and Game department for advice. Since we didn’t own a shotgun (just kidding), we went for option #2: drain the pond, thus trapping it and then capture it for transport elsewhere. With the three younger grandchildren here with their mother, we managed to siphon the water out, locate the turtle and eventually shove him into a large bucket. After diner, we all loaded up and set off for my mother’s farm and turned him loose in the creek. He was covered in the sludge from the bottom of the pond and very disgruntled when he finally got into a shallow pool in the creek bed. I’m sure he is a lot happier today since he had eaten all the frogs in our place and now had a whole new area to forage in. Never a dull moment around here.

Love! Love! Love! We have gopher turtles here in my yard. They wander all over and graze. they are protected by Once in a while two males will fight and turn the other over on his back. I have to go out and turn the poor thing back over. LOL! They are protected by Fl. State law. Love the fact that he was moved. Awesome images. Hugs

Well, at least it's an opportunity to clean the mill pond! LOL That looks like a pretty big snapper - and they are pretty dangerous critters. And they can move surprisingly fast - I'm amazed you were able to capture him (her? it?) without a fight. I'm sure the frog population in your pond will breathe a sigh of relief (if there are any left!).

Great series of photos, Teri!

What an amazing adventure! Great series of photos! I do believe Mr. Snapper is in a far better place and little fingers are safe for the time being! Excellent work on this one! Bravo!
