Description

I took this photo from Mayflower Park, which affords a very good view of a large area of the western side of Southampton docks. Southampton is one of the busiest commercial ports in the world. When I went there a couple of weeks ago there were FIVE of the really enormous modern cruise ships in various docks around its harbour, as well as many cargo ships, a couple of military supply vessels, several ferries shuttling back and forth and a multitude of other ships and boats of various sizes and purposes. Further downwater, towards the open sea, is Fawley Oil Refinery which has its own berths for chemical and oil tankers. The two cruise ships and the cargo ship in this photo are small compared to the giants which often dominate the skyline on the eastern side.

Even these smaller ones look too much like floating blocks of flats for me!

Nice photo of these two top-heavy shoe cartons. I just can't understand the mind-set of modern ship designers and builders. These are too top heavy. My father was a marine and naval architect and had a few things to say about every ship catastrophe. But that doesn't detract from the photo. In fact, I like the clouds - almost an ominous omen! Keep up the good work! :-)
