This railway viaduct is only about a mile or so from where I live and I walk it frequently - although for this photo I took the path that goes under it, rather than along it. It has 33 arches and was built in the late 1880s as the railways expanded, but the line it carried fell into disuse in the 1960s. The viaduct still remained and gradually became derelict. The local council was, at one time, thinking of donating it to the nearby army base for use in explosives training but - fortunately - that idea fell through. So it stood there, crumbling slowly through the years (with a few brave souls walking their dogs along it every so often) until 2012 when the Society for Sustainable Transport (Sustrans) stepped in and twisted the council's arms until they allowed it to restore it - and the council even gave Sustrans some money! It opened to the public in 2013 and it's now beautifully spruced up and part of the National Cycle and Footpath Network and it's great to see large numbers of walkers and cyclists of all ages enjoying it.
