Description
Operation Bolo was intended to lure the North Vietnamese Air Force into a trap to eliminate the MiG threat. Conceived by Col. Robin Olds (A WW2 double ace with 12 Kills, and Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base), the plan was to equip F-4 Phantoms with ECM Pods to mimic the F-105 Thunderchief and to fly the same flight routes and profiles as the Fighter/Bombers were usually assigned. This included using call-signs usually applied to F-105 flights to fool any radio intercepts made by the NVAF.
Operation Bolo would become the single largest aerial battle of the Vietnam War, with a total of 11 - 14 MiG-21's engaged, 7 destroyed and 2 shot down (nearly half of the MiG-21 compliment of the NVAF). As a result the NVAF would suspend aerial operations for several months while they rebuilt their fighter strength and retrained their pilots in new air-to-air tactics.
Col. Robin Olds would score a kill this mission, and received the Silver Star (his 3rd). He then went on to score 4 more kills in subsequent missions making him a triple ace. He would also be awarded a 4th Silver Star, and the Air Force Cross before completing his Tour of Duty in Vietnam.
