Description

Visiting a silk farm was on the itinerary of our trip through Cambodia. This silk farm is located along the highway between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and is owned by an American and his Cambodian wife. We were shown the entire process, from growing the Mulberry trees to the silk worms to the dyeing of the silk fiber to the weaving, and all steps in- between. The size of the operation is determined by an assured water supply. Two sizes of scarfs were made and they were for sale. The wife, who acted as manager, knew by the color and pattern of the scarf which girl had made it. The goal of the American was to provide employment for local girls and paid them a reasonable price, by local standards. The problem he has with the girls is that as soon as they can afford it they get a cell phone, soon to be followed by a boy friend, and sooner or later by wanting to get married, raise a family, and quit their job. The prices for the scarfs were very reasonable, a fraction of what they cost in America or Europe, with many middle men making money before it is offered for sale. This picture was taken on 17 August 2012, Sig...

Excellent capture Sig. Your information was interesting too. At first, I was sorry for the choices these girls make in their life. And then I thought that our teenagers are not that different: they just want a cellphone to play to Pokemon Go... It's a pity to see how our technological societies ruin our future generations : they don't have any perspective in their life ! We spend billions for their instruction and they don't realize how fortunate they are !

Kudos to the couple who are providing work and skills for these young women. One never knows where it might lead them. It's nice to see traditional ways of manufacture at work
