Really unsure about this image....not originally what I had intended. The right side has been completely removed, a staff in hand emitting bright light....had to remove it, looked silly

I think you made a good choice with the cropping. This way all the attention is focused on his face even with the hand and glowing ring right in the viewers face. DOF helps dissipate their presence. I like!!!
