Waiting behind the doorway from the kitchen, Matilda hears everything.
“…Yoo hoo Hailey, it’s your cousins… now where is that stupid maid… probably simple…”
It has always been that way in the mansion where the servants knew all that was happening and when they were needed and when they should keep quiet.

the real reason there were hidden doors and halls within the mansions - so the servant could be Johnny on the spot with whatever was needed. A good servant does this and more to ensure their employment.
In this case, the cousins may find their stay a bit 'interesting' and away from the norm, as it were. and at this point, rightly so!

If Matilda only spits in Elenoir's tea it will be a miracle. Aren't all old mansions required to have a supply of arsenic? The story gets more interesting with each panel.
