Description

Taken in the Hoh Rain Forest. This kind of formation of trees in a straight line is known as a colonnade. They grow this way because they have grown on a fallen log, which is known as a nurse log. Because of the densely covered ground, many seedlings instead germinate on the fallen, decaying nurse logs. As they grow, their roots reach to the ground around the nurse log. When the log eventually rots away, the colonnade remains. Please zoom.
