They are built to stop the beach being washed away by erosion. Eventually the sand will totally cover them.

Yes, we have the too on the north coast of Zealand, but I know severel places, where the people wish, they had them on there beach too. Bureaucracy is delaying the proces and severel people will simply lose their summer houses to the ocean. Some have already lost theirs.
