Description
Mildred's last weary task of the evening was to bring Madame her evening draught. She brought it in a teacup, but it was more potent. Hopefully, Madame would soon fall asleep and not require further attendance.

I contrast this stark and dreary work to the previous one of lush but dark temptation. Here, the maid is in a boring place that looks the same no matter where she goes. There is no mystery, no contact with nature. Her uniform is drab but properly crisp, her comportment is stiff, and she is merely going through the motions. Even her intention is dull, it's just another wearing task at the end of the day.
