Description

When we are out taking pictures, I am always asking, "when, what, why, how". Thank goodness for park signs and Google, the answers are usually findable. It took me awhile to figure out what I am about to write below, so if you already know this, please indulge me:-) 500,000 years ago there was a great grassy plain hundreds if not thousands of feet above this entire scene. The lower bowl in the center-ground has just eroded to a much greater extent than the background. So, everyone of those layers exposed in the background used to extend across this entire area. Eventually, the background will look like the center-ground. You know...in a mere couple of 100,000 years or so. Zoom worthy.

This is a magnificent view, and you've captured its depth beautifully, Bill! This spot is always well worth a re-visit! :-D

Phenomenal photo!

It looks so unreal, like something from a computer game!

So what you are saying is that we shouldn't make any plans. This is a wild image. It looks like someone or something reached in and scooped out the middle. A superb image.

I've never been there, but it reminds me a little of the Needles area of Canyonlands (though more yellow, where Canyonlands has more reds). If not for the road & vehicles, I can easily imagine this as an alien world...

I have heard of the "Badlands" from my son Jeff, when he plays computer games, but we both didn't know, that they actually existed for real - so, a quick Google search and we watched 'a visit to the South Dakota Badlands' ! (been there - done that now!) LOL, thanks Bill and we also seen a few fossil digs - very interesting.

also a very cool panorama and POV, especially when enlarged - we discovered a lot more... 👌
