Description
As we head back down the corridor towards the stage door, we meet Rosilyn or Ros as she likes to be called stepping out of the women’s dressing room; This is where she spends much of her time helping with costume changes and makeup. Rosilyn is listed in the program as costume designer. She decides along with the director what actors wear on stage.
Ros is carrying her sewing bag which serves as a general purpose emergency kit containing needle and thread, safety pins, bandages, tweezers and who knows what else for fixing costumes and whatever else needs immediate repair.
Ros makes a living buying old clothes, restoring them and selling them as antique costumes in several of the city’s outdoor antique markets. That is how she acquires much of the company’s costume collection.
Ros trained to be a dancer but decided against a career in ballet when it became evident she was not destined to become a prima ballerina. But she keeps in shape and often wears ballet gear backstage. She moves around a lot backstage, checking the dressing rooms to remind actors when they need to be ready for entrances and reporting back to the stage manager when they are in position. Otherwise she can usually be found in the women’s dressing room sitting in a corner with her sewing bag open and working on a garment of some kind.
This finishes the backstage tour for now, but we will be back soon and learning more about the backstage crew and what takes place behind the scenes.
