Description

The Maine coast is known for its exposed bedrock. This rock is at Schootic Point, a part of Acadia National Park. This "pink granite" began as molten magma that was forced by pressure upward through fissures in the earth's crust. It pooled below the earth's surface and cooled as granite. During the cooling process, the granite cracked. Later molten basalt was forced upward through the cracks in the older granite. The black rock in a seam in the left foreground of this photo is basalt. Basalt seams like this exist all along this shoreline. Since basalt is softer than granite it erodes at a higher rate and appears lower than the surrounding granite. Glaciation, water and wind have long ago removed the layers of earth that originally overlaid this rock.

Dramatic shot, Bill - looks like it could be the remains of an ancient Roman temple after an earthquake. I visited Acadia National Park many years ago (I think when I was a teenager), but didn't get to see anything like this - what I remember are vast forests in glorious fall colors...

A very impressive landscape and the description is an added plus. I think I've been spoiled by modern times however. All I can think of is "Look at all those kitchen counter tops."

I dunno, Bill,,,, That looks awfully uncomfortable for a bed.......

Sorry - couldn't resist.. :-D

It may be rough to sleep on, but it makes for a wonderful photo with your practiced eye and camera, my friend! A fascinating landscape!

Aw, RodS beat me with the hard bed pun! Surprising how much we can read out of a scene like this. Is that Tara on the rocks left of center? Looks like a nice windy day far from home. All your photos could be made into a travel book of North America! Keep up the good work! :-)

Looks a lot like the coast of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Maine have some much in common....
