Description

To give you a respite from the rocky coast of Maine, here is a pano of Casco Bay. Portland, Maine is just off to the left of this view. During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the War of 1812 (1812-1815), the British Royal Navy successfully stopped most maritime activity along the coast of Maine as well as the other colonies/states along the Atlantic Coast. There are three stone forts in this pano built after the War of 1812 to protect Portland Harbor. Can you find all three? Moving from right to left, there is Fort Scammel, then Fort Gorges and way over to the left is Fort Prebble...all built of gray granite blocks. Unfortunately, they all became obsolete by the 1860s thanks to powerful rifled cannons in use by all the navies of those days. Please zoom. These old forts make great places climb over and explore these days!

I found all three as well but was distracted by the beauty of the scene and my overwhelming desire to be sailing on what looks to be a yawl at the center of the picture.

great capture

I am glad that they lost the battle however. I would not be wanting to pay for some monarch's wealthy habits
