Description

"I don't want to go back to Pie," Eve said leaving the Unnamed Soldiers' Cemetery. "When I think about how they treated you ... only the Pie star has been kind to us, but it's a star and has its ways and times." Eve smiled and looked at JS who nodded and smiled back. She liked him leaving her time to work out her ideas and feelings. "You know, the one thing I really regret is that my mother couldn't see how you were magnificent when you came to rescue us," she went on. "Unfortunately she realized who were the bad guys too late, when there was nothing to do. No, don’t even say it, I know you've arrived as soon as you found out where we were, no one could do more than you... Now I know what it means having hard, painful choices to make, the kind you kept locked inside you..." He hugged her. "... and thank you for trying to protect me from that horror." Eve was comfortably cuddled up to him, her head nestling in the crook of his shoulder, but able to look into his eyes. Every time she snuggled up to JS, Eve was amazed how her body fit perfectly on to JS's, how she felt good, safe and protected in his tight embrace ... and there was no place in his mind where she couldn't stroll around. "Okay, where do you wanna go? Or would you rather stay aboard wandering around the galaxy?" "No, I think we need a planet where having a home for us and for the kids, ours own and the others'. Gila is close, do you know it?" JS nodded and put his hand on her belly. "How many eggs?" he grinned with mirth. "Silly man," she laughed giving him a slight nudge. "Ouch," he laughed, "how you dare, I'm convalescing." He kissed her. At dinner JS said: "I think we should accept Maurr's offer. If it's okay for you, we're going to Larir. We'll drop off who doesn't like the idea." "We are with you, all of us" said Vickie, "Fierce's already there and Dirk and Kukri are joining us." A year later Larry Qing sought and obtained an interview. The royalties for the first pictures of their baby, Adam Miki Sea, were astronomical. "Now that you've hung the gun on the nail, how are you doing?" "Nicely. We've private means. We have the proceeds of our mineral resources and a travel company with two luxury cruise ships..." "Where he has fun going on the sly every now and then!" Eve grinned. "Really?" "Yes, it's to see if I'm losing my edge, and no, nobody spotted me!" "I saw some Grays into the astroport, how is it that?" "I never hated THE Grays, just some bastards who happen to be Grays. Those are good people who seek refuge and understanding, and it is their right to be here as anyone else. Larir is large and there is plenty of room." "A personal question: JS, the man, the soldier, how does he spend his time?" "Sunbathing, eating cheese, drinking wine, making love and breeding horses and donkeys. On the Earth they're extinct thanks to the prohibition of using them as pack animals or for riding; in the end no one wanted them, they're too bulky. There are only a few in the theme-parks." "Here they're free, we ride them and take care of them." Eve added. A few days later, while Eve was arranging little Adam in the cradle, Flotsam and Jetsam and the youngsters called on them. JS was catnapping by the pool. "We'd like to ask JS something." Jetsam said. "OK, he doesn't sleep but dozes awake like a lizard on a warm stone." Eve said. "Jay, I know that after everything you've been through, you and Eve, our request is a bit inappropriate, but we can't stop thinking about it. Would you help us to find the survivors of our race in the Insectoids' galaxy?" "A bit of action at last!" Dirk hoorayed. Gentle snoring. "He's sleeping" Jetsam stated matter-of-factly. Eve shrugged: "The decision is to Jay, but I'd love to help you. Those Insectoids were horrible people!" After a too extended silence Flotsam said: "Well, I understand if you no longer want to see action ..." At the word "ACTION" JS opened one eye and a broad smile curled his lips. THE END

Dear friends and readers this is the final chapter of the Canals of New Mars saga that began March 1, 2009. When I posted the first image I had no idea I was about starting a story, but some comments invited me to do it and I decided to accept the challenge - I love challenges - both with regard to the images and texts, and the English language I knew very little then (thanks to Sandra for her patience). Initially I was thinking to write twenty episodes, more or less... by now they are 369 thanks to your love, your gifts, your comments. I had great fun to write and compose Canals of New Mars and I must say I am very fond of JS and Eve. Some of you have asked for a prequel, others want me to go on with the saga. I'm thinking about it because no author likes to abandon her characters that are part of herself. Now while I’m collecting my ideas for new adventures for our heroes, I’ll publish something else, a short story in a Neolithic environment and a story set in the Iron Age written by Sandra. However loyal fans of JS and Eve, do not despair ... They'll be back!

Awesome work you did on this story... and am afraid I missed the last two episodes... guess I'll just have some fun going over them later, and maybe as I always do keep reading the other that I've already have... I sometimes find myself doing this for hours.
