Description

The Convair F-102 A 'Delta Dagger', commonly referred to as the 'Deuce', was the USAF's first operational supersonic interceptor and delta wing fighter. They were part of the Air Defense Command (ADC) which in turn was part of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). A total of 889 F-102 A's were produced and they were in service between 1956 and 1979. F-102 A's were used in Southeast Asia as early as 1962. While I was serving in Southeast Asia in 1966 and 1967, F-102 A's of the 64th and 509th Fighter Interceptor Squadrons (FIS) of the 405th Fighter Wing (FW), 13th Air Force, PCAF. were used on a rotational basis in Bien Hoa AB and Da Nang AB, Vietnam, and Udorn RTAB, and Don Muang AB, Thailand. F-102s were also used by Turkey and Greece. In Southeast Asia besides functioning as interceptors, they were primarily used for combat air patron (CAP) missions for B-52's and for air ground support using their 24 2.75 in (70 mm) rockets.
