Before people lived in the Third World, where we are now, they lived in the Second World. Most people looked the way they do now, but some, those belonging to the Tsiatko, or Spirit Tribe, were giants. They were much larger than other people, even bigger than the Bear people, and they were peaceful, so long as they were respected. They often took mates from among the other people, and if they heard of an orphan who could not be cared for by his own tribe, they would adopt the child into the Tsiatko tribe and teach him their ways. Like the Bear, they were covered with fur, but unlike the Bear, the Tsiatko were very industrious and created many strange and wonderful things unheard of among the other people. Chief among these were the sky shields, which the Tsiatko could use to ride the winds to all corners of the world.
When the Second World was about to be destroyed by flood because of the people's wickedness, particularly the Snake people, the Tsiatko took the good people on their sky shields and floated above the rising waters until they floated through a hole that led to this, the Third World. There, most of the people settled and were happy. But the Tsiatko saw that some of the Snake people and other evil individuals had also survived, so they held a great council about what had just happened, and they worried that this Third World, like the two before it, would be destroyed by the people's wickedness. The Tsiatko decided it would be wise to ride their sky shields up to the heavens and find a suitable home for the good people. As the journey would be long and dangerous, the Tsiatko chose only the bravest, strongest and wisest to go. Those Tsiatko who stayed behind were told to remain as guardians over the good people and the forests. Before they left for the heavens, the Tsiatko warned those who stayed to avoid the Snake people and their allies, lest they become corrupted and the world be destroyed before the Tsiatko returned.
It has been many, many generations since then, and the Snake people and their allies have corrupted much of the world. The good people no longer fill the land. Many have died because of the Snake's influence, and even some of the Tsiatko have been turned, becoming the evil creatures known as Stick Indians, or the Night People, who crave human flesh. Now there are few of us left, and even the faithful Tsiatko have removed themselves to quiet corners of the deep forest, where men rarely walk.
