I'm just back for a few comments now, Steve, but I'll be back for longer sessions after the holidays. It's never easy to choose one or two images, because your work is always so packed and rich. I chose this because it's a true closeup, with mostly the face; and I love your sense of imagination and the way you take off on themes around you. Maybe you know it, but playing cards (including the Joker) go all the way back to ancient times, and traveled through China, Persia, the Middle East, and Europe. Those famous kings and queens were often based on real royalty. And the joker, an ancient trickster who turned royal courts upside down, was always a sinister and fun character at the same time...sometimes very dark, sometimes very silly. You've got all that here. She looks at us without a smidgeon of fear, she dares us. And you have her in suitable shadow, and the background is simple because so much is going on in her face and outfit, nothing else is needed...And you got the title right-side-up and upside-down (like on cards). Love the piece. You must've felt some Joker was playing with your life, the last year or so. I hope she's gone away, or else decided to bring you laughter instead. Her evil ran its course long ago...another inventive and technically very fine piece from you.
