Description

Ollantaytambo, known by locals and visitors as Ollanta, is the last town on the way to Machu Picchu that can be reached by road. The town is dominated by two massive Inca ruins. It is the best surviving example of Inca city planning, with narrow cobblestone streets that have been continuously inhabited since the 13th century. In Ollantaytamo the locals build their homes on top of the existing Inca foundations. This can be seen in this photo in the change of construction materials. The narrow streets have small drainage ditches in the center. Ollantaytamo, at an altitude of 9,160-ft, is located at the lower end of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, 58 km from Pisac, located at the upper end of the valley at an altitude of 9,514-ft. Because of the relatively shallow descend of the Urubamba River, this area has irrigated fields along both sides of the river growing mostly potatoes and corn. From Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, a further 30.5 km downstream, the elevation has dropped to 6,693-ft and from Aguas Calientes to Iquitos, still in Peru, the distance is 1,049 km and the elevation at that city is 341-ft. Iquitos is 3,600 km (~2,250 mi) from the mouth of the Amazon where it spills into the Atlantic Ocean. This picture was taken on 26 August 2014, Sig....

Talk about living in the house that Grandpa built! I'd find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that my house foundations were laid in the 1200's.

What amazes me is that people live there and make a living there. Nice photo illustrating the continuum in construction and life. Keep up the good work! :-)
