Description

This immense ruin of both religious and military significance is the most impressive in the immediate area around Cusco. Today, only 20% of the original structure remains. Soon after the Spaniards arrived they tore down many walls and used the blocks to build their own houses in Cusco, leaving the largest and most impressive rocks. In 1536 the fort was the site of one of most bitter battles of the Spanish conquest. More than two years after Picarro's entry into Cusco, the rebellious Manco Inca recaptured the lightly guarded Sacsaywaman and layed a ten months unsuccessful siege to the conquistadors in Cusco. The site was first built by the Killke culture about 1100, they had occupied the area since 900. The Inca expanded the site and from the 13th century on they built dry stone walls, constructed from huge stones. The workers carefully cut the boulders to fit them together tightly without mortar. The site is at an altitude of 3,700 m (12,142-ft) overlooking Cusco. This picture was taken on 28 August 2014, Sig.. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. I will be gone for about two weeks, Sig...

The ancient Andeans were very skilled craftsmen, and tough fighters! A fine shot of their handiwork.
