Sculptris is the baby brother of Zbrush, the famous and powerful sculpting 3D modeler. It was originally developed independently by a programmer, but it then was bought out by Pixelogic, the company that owns Zbrush. It is now available for freeware and it is quite powerful even though it has a few simple tools. You can sculpt realistic organic models with it modeling a basic shape just like virtual clay, and then can paint it with simple colors and textures and also interactively paint bump and displacement maps as well. I like it myself and have done a few experiments with it and created a few trial human figure models with it and one time also created a terrain with it.
Another sculpting modeler that is very good is Curvy 3D by Aartform. It is quite inexpensive compared to ZBrush, but still has a nice array of features. In this modeler, you can draw basic 3D shapes using mouse or pen and then merge the shapes into a single entity rather like a sophisticated Boolean union operation and then sculpt the result like clay. You can paint the model, but the painting tools in Curvy are somewhat limited, so you may need to create textures in another application if you want texture, bump, and displacement maps, etc.
Very good work with Sculptris. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the commercial. I will look at that software sometime.
