Description

Given that I have only started using Terragen, I bought it a couple months ago, I am even amazed at the level of realism possible with this software. This actually looks like a NASA photo. This is a world I created with Terragen that I call Ektrab. I am not finished with it yet, since I want to add more color and features to the landmasses, since now the continents are a dull grayish color and I need to put snow on top of the mountains and vary the colors of the landscape. But this is my first go at creating a fractal world in Terragen. I have also created worlds in another piece of software called Fractal Terrains, and I can import the bump maps into Terragen, so now I can create entire worlds galore. But this exercise was to create a world procedurally using only Terragen and its node system, rather than importing any height maps.

Nice shot. POVs like this are perfect for the ozone effect in the atmo node. Crank that up you will get some great effects

Well, this is supposed to be a more pristine world, without the major cities and the smog and ozone pollution. But if I create a planet with huge cities and heavy industry, I will certainly crank up the ozone and smog filters. Of course there is natural ozone in the atmosphere and I may try to play with that to see what that does. But the problem is that renders like this take a long time to do. Even on moderate quality settings, even on my relatively powerful computer (I have a gaming PC, with 32 GB RAM, and an i7 processor with 8 virtual cores), it still took about 3 hours to render a single image to a size of my screen at 1920 x 1080 pixels. But hey, sometimes the wait is worth it.

Thanks for your comments on my work and critiques.

Finding documentation for Terragen is a major pain in the butt. The Planetside website does contain some documentation, but it is incomplete. There are also manuals for Terragen in .pdf format and .htm and .mht formats, but these are for older versions which will not cover all of the newer features in Terragen 4 or any upgrades or changes in the software since the older versions. The Planetside website also contains a forum -- a community of Terragen users which often share their experiences and what they have learned from tinkering and using the software.

So from a combination of reading and studying the manuals and tutorials that I have been able to glean from the internet I was able to learn quite a bit about Terragen. Some of it is just learning by experimenting too. Just playing around with things and seeing what they do.

Of course DAZ Studio has rather crappy documentation too. (I myself have both DAZ and Poser.) But I see what people have been able to do with DAZ. And from what I have seen of your work, you seem to have done pretty well with DAZ.

Thanks for your comment. I will look forward to seeing more of your work.
