Description

Had a big photo shoot of this diorama. Most figures are from the Sanderson Crecy set. They are now permanently mounted on a squarish board. Scenery is twigs, cat litter (unused), and various lichens from model railroading. The real battle was fought on a muddy field after an all-night rainstorm. I have no idea if the following day was overcast, but that is the general effect I wanted to convey. Available light digital photo modified with PP9 DCE. Kodak digital camera. Heavy use of stone (default) texture to original image to erode the 'photo' feel. Additional treatment: A dark-brown frame with about 45% opacity and total feathering turned 45 degrees. The effect is to create a diamond-shaped 'hole' in the center of the image. I find this useful for framing the central figures. Then a regular square frame (i.e. at 0 degrees), black, was placed on top of this. This helped to further define the 'hole' containing the main action. This was topped with a black oval vignette frame of moderate transparency followed by a black square frame of less transparency. This was done to add a gradually darkening for the overall frame. The effect of all the frames is to get the colors to mix and to fool with the edges so things don't look as if they were generated by 'cookie cutter' settings. Everything holds the viewer's eye in the center. The multitude of frames is not easy to keep track of, but the advantage (IMO) is that you can gradually blot out action not central to the main figures, but still hint at other things happening. (For example: the horse entering from left and the dismounted rider picking up a sword from the field.) Yes, the lances are a bit bent. After 20+ years of travel . . . Off-scene spots in upper corners and at center bottom. Orangish at the bottom and grayish at the top. Yes, using black and / or gray lights makes a difference. An overall gray atmospere was added to the lighting effects. -- Thanks for viewing! --
