Description

Last night I went to a friend's 70th birthday party at a local hotel. There were 80 gay men, 2 straight men and two straight women, ie his sister and me. I was supposed to be there to take pics, but John's brother in law had a better camera and so I left it to him. It was incredibly tricky to get decent pics especially as I detest the both the type and especially the volume of music in discos ! Still I was quite pleased with a couple of pics which captured the atmosphere. And the buffet was tasty. See another Here

Great photos of the happy looking crowd and lightshow Andrea.

I agree the Buffet would be better than Disco Music these days.

Two words: ear plugs. And both of these pictures are great. I love the light and the motion blur.

yes---I love these. The flickr version is less motion-blurred and more eerie, with that typical club lighting and late night blue. Like we're peeking into a private moment between people. This shot is filled with motion blur and terrific light effects (from the motion, I assume), and it captures the real feeling of a club in action. As one who's played jazz in clubs, and breathed in that intense atmosphere many years, I can attest to how real this is. The moving lights across the guys' shirts make it look like the men are made of light, and we can see their circuitry through their shirts. Love this shot, and the fact that it goes on below, for a bit (large floor area below the main subjects of the photo). Everything arises out of darkness in these clubs. Love this shot.

(I hated disco music so much, I wanted to scream. I worked in a record store during my first years of grad school, and they were THE disco market for chicago---I mean they sold to all the disco clubs in the city. ((I played jazz clubs, for clarification, not disco.)) So I heard that beat over and over, until I was ready to scream. And, while I like other Pop forms a lot more, I also don't get how you're supposed to talk when the music is so loud. That applies to classical as well as pop: I never could understand how you could have an intimate talk when the walls were shaking. I would find it very hard to photograph in a place like that. I'd get motion blur from the decibels alone...)

(btw, a mafia underboss came in to that record store, and asked me to pick out opera for his wife. I made her happy, and he offered me a job as a result. Do you know what it's like to have a big, rotund mafiosa take you into and alley, and tell you---in a movie-like mafia-rough voice, that he wants you to come work for him? Wasn't easy to say 'no'. He had 2 henchmen standing at the end of the alley, with guns ((you could see them in their pockets)), and 2 very young ladies in the car, too. Not a great job interview...I turned down the job. And my girlfriend---get this---said, "Mark! We could use the money!" Oh yeah. I'm gonna work for a mob underboss. Oh yeah. You got the right guy...)
