It was at that moment that I lost my foothold -- not again, curse it! -- and plunged through one of the rectangular apertures. Strangely, gravity appeared to work differently in this Stygian realm; I floated gently down, down, until presently I found myself in what I would surmise to be a deeper level of the abyss. I said 'surmise' as I could see no rectangular holes in the ceiling through which I'd presumably have fallen. Here I was confronted with a fresh spectacle: an enormous hallway stretched far ahead of me, lined with row after row of arches which traversed its breadth. Again there were no signs of life -- nothing stirred -- and the entire place was so devoid of sounds the ears hurt. As I gazed into the murky distance into which the hallway led, I could discern a vague blue glow. What was its source? To what could this passage lead? There was only one way to find out...
