From the stock maybe turn of 16th century? My first appreciation of government sponsered ignorance in the UK (and discovery of true meaning of history) was finding about the anglo-dutch wars, its sad how we're manipulated as children.

I would guess that these are matchlocks; but that is a guess. And yes, the Anglo-Dutch Wars were unknown to me as well until I entered my thirties, an omission from history lessons even in Canada. On the other hand, I've met Europeans who never knew of the War of 1812 or that the American War of Independence featured expeditions against both Montréal and Québec City in 1775. (Both failed, if you're wondering.)
