I tried bones in Carrara. Maya and 3DSMax and Cinema 4D have similar concepts for bones for a character or you can use one of the stock skeletons in Poser. Once the joint positions are set and IK is included it has to be mated to your surface character model. At least with a robot you don't have to deal with also making other rigs for clothes.
