I think you can clear that unwanted grainy look if you render at a huge size, apply a gaussian blur or any kind of blur, resample the render down to about half the original size and apply a sharpen filter or unsharp mask.

thanks for the comments, I stopped the render early as I had to leave and wasnt coming back - I will let it go to 100% and see what changes! I liked it anyway, so wanted to share :)
