Description

Scraping thru the camera phones to round out the pictures I didn't take... sheesh. Also starting to recover from a week of being flat out with flu. We have Mrs. W standing in front of one of her former charges ... in a way. When I met her, she was working for the RAF and provisioning spares for Harriers and Vulcans. She had a fondness for them, even if not having been this close to the complete article. The skyline behind is Hells Kitchen and we found a decent "Irish" pub with Decent food and some extraordinary restroom accommodations. Normally one expects a door in/out but this place had an entire wall of in/out doors alongside each other. All I can think is it must have been handy in days when there was a serious need to use the facilities and no time for the niceties of a single entrance. Definitely genuine old décor compared to the fake "Olde Tyme" décor so many places now have. Just go straight off the pier and in three blocks. Can't miss it. I'm looking at the flight deck surface and wondering if this is supposed to be for real or just indicative of INTREPID's new status as a museum... no more TOLs so might as well go for something that will stand up to the crowds. (Mike? Ideas?) They had a cross section of the original flight deck in the hangar deck, but ... well, no picture. Sorry. (Must go back to take photos.) Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

Great photo. Lots of RAF bases round here in Lincolnshire, home of the Red Arrows.

Oh yes! I recall the Arrows appearing at some of our 4th of July celebrations. Always glad to see a crack aerobatic team!

Nice photo of this versatile plane. I see it's well chained down so it won't get stolen! Love these photos. Keep up the good work. And, yes, would be nice with a cross section of the flight deck. Must be rather thick, eh? :-)

Stolen is always a possible. Blown overboard is a definite possibility as well. Yes, it was thick. I recall that LEXINGTON had a very beat up flight deck from all the baby pilots. Got to learn somewhere and you are NOT going to scratch the flagship, Mister!

the paint with the grit is typical of any flight deck. It provides a gripping surface for the aircraft and personnel, especially in wet weather. Great capture
